Jose Ramirez is in the midst of, maybe not his best campaign, but his most unique season. Ramirez is currently hitting .281 on the season. With two strikes, he is batting .282 and in non-two strike counts he is batting 280. The last season (min. 400 ABs) that saw a batter with a two strike average higher than their non-two strike average is 2015 where Jose Iglesias hit .309 and .294, respectively. It doesn’t stop there for Ramirez. He is on pace to post the second highest slugging percentage (.548) with two strikes since the 2007 season.
We would also like to shout out Victor Martinez and his great 2014 season. That season Martinez slashed .335/.409/.565 with a .338 two strike average and .332 non-two strike average. His .560 slugging percentage with two strikes is currently the high water mark that Jose Ramirez is chasing.
This got us thinking about some other hitters that are having some particularly wacky seasons. We landed on Yandy Diaz. Diaz is currently sporting a .284 batting average on pitches outside the strike zone while only hitting .264 on pitches in the strike zone.
We would like to give an honorable mention to Luis Arraez who just missed the cutoff because he is hitting .308 on in zone pitches and .305 on out of zone pitches. He and Bobby Witt Jr. are currently doing something profound in their own right. They are hitting above .300 on pitches both in and out of the zone. Witt Jr. holds a .362 in zone average and a .320 out of zone average.
They would be the 9th and 10th players to hit over .300 on in zone and out of zone pitches in a respective season since 2007.
