While it is not a hidden skill in baseball, baserunning is something teams can do to gain that slight advantage from game to game. Some examples of this are going first to third on singles, stolen bases, heads up baserunning plays, and amazing slides to avoid tags among others. So, who leads MLB this season with positive baserunning plays?
The Padres come away as the leaders with 44 positive baserunning plays through play on May 8. Some are as simple as going first to third on a single or first to home on a double. Others include reading the ball in dirt and taking second or third base on a wild pitch. The two teams with the least amount of these plays (19) are the Athletics and Blue Jays.
On the negative side, the Nationals have the most (10) blunders on the basepaths. Some of these negative plays include over sliding bags, caught stealing, and being picked off. The biggest one is running into an out unnecessarily. Sometimes this occurs on line drive double plays and other times it can be a bad send where the runner is out by a good 20 feet.
